Embrace Your Emotions: Developing Social and Emotional Intelligence Curriculum Book
Emotional intelligence is broadly defined as being able to recognise, understand and develop our feelings. Emotional intelligence is just as important as a child's academic ability. Being able to recognise and embrace our emotions, as well as having parents, carers, teachers and educators who can guide our children in all phases of educational growth is an essential part of a child's emotional development.
The purpose of the WorryWoo Developing Emotional Intelligence Program (DEI) is to introduce social and emotional learning (SEL) as an essential part of a school's literacy and arts curriculum in order to:
Create positive emotional understanding
Improve emotional intelligence
Develop a healthy social environment for the children
The program goals will be accomplished by including lesson plans on emotions, relationships and social-emotional skills. These will be adapted to language arts, visual arts and performing arts lessons in connection with common core standards to create a cross-curriculum platform.
Evidence Based After 10 weeks of using the WorryWoo DEI Program the teachers found that students were better able to manage their emotions. Specifically, the results indicated a significant positive impact on the students regarding:
Recognition of basic and complex emotions
Attitude towards themselves and others
Ability to control their emotions
Understanding the feelings of others
Reduced feelings of "feeling like a failure"
The WorryWoo program is based on several pedagogical philosophies adapted from Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence (Harvard:1983) and the five CASEL Competencies. Together they form the foundation of engaging curriculum which subtly encompassed a UDL approach. Lesson plans are presented in an inviting, age/stage appropriate manner relating themes in Literacy and the Arts with activities that reflect attention to developing critical thinking skills.
